I launched my consultancy in 2020 to help others do what I had done so successfully since 1995 – use digital media to advance mission and reach business objectives.
For a dozen years, at Global Kids (a NYC-based after school organization) then for six years at the American Museum of Natural History,
I oversaw the strategy, design, and implementation of a slate of over 100 youth courses that applied the latest technology to engage youth to develop their skills and passions through youth media productions and design practices.
I also worked for over a decade with museums to innovate visitor-facing experiences through iterative design, with a particular focus on prototyping and evaluating cutting-edge visitor-facing experiences. Most recently, as VP of Digital Experience at the Girl Scouts of the USA, I used tools of user experience (UX) and customer experience (CX) to make complexity accessible, supporting the development of a seamless digital customer experience that increased retention and drove new membership.
I have taught thousands of NYC youth and facilitated over a thousand hours of youth programming, including as troop leader of my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. My first book, Seltzertopia, came out in 2018, and I often write about digital engagement on my blog Mooshme.org.

In 2012 when I began my time at the American Museum of Natural History, I created a new blog to talk about my adventures exploring issues related to digital media and museum-based learning. It featured original interviews, thought pieces, and highlights from my work and those of my colleagues at the AMNH. Starting in 2020, with the launch of Barry Joseph Consultancy, LLC, I turned this blog into a place to explore digital engagement writ large. Oh, and btw: Congratulations! You found my Easter egg. I built my first web site in June, 1995. Since then, I have built many sites. The first overarching one ran from 1995-2005. I share it here now strictly for historical purposes. And that site was replaced with a family site when my son was born in 1995; I promised my wife that once I launched this new one I would still include a link back to that one. Now I fulfill my promise.
Science and Arts Engagement New York (SAENY) and the City College of New York (CCNY) have launched The Harlem Gallery of Science (HGS) to contribute to a sustainable ecosystem that engages youth in low-income communities to explore educational and career pathways into the STEM fields. BJC is acting as project lead to support them to explore how today’s young people understand the games they play, how those interests might connect them with STEM opportunities, and how the two can be combined into a pipeline to CCNY. More specifically, BJC will focus on producing a new after school game design program for high school youth and oversee Customer Insight activities regarding NYC youth and games.
I am working with Games for Change, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and General Motors, to launch Game Plan. Game Plan is a new professional development program, designed for our current era of social distancing, to raise museum capacity for using games and game-like learning within youth programming. Along with a modest stipend, Game Plan is providing curriculum, online training, a supportive community, and the opportunity for museum youth to compete in a nation-wide game design challenge themed on the idea of resiliency.
I provide analysis and key insights to the Natural History Museum of Utah to help them identify strategic opportunities for increasing the engagement and reach of Research Quest. Research Quest is NHMU’s premier, digitally-delivered education program and used in classrooms across the U.S. It offers middle school teachers an engaging and powerful series of science investigations that improve students’ critical thinking skills.

I am working with the Jewish Education Project, which empowers Jewish educators to help their students and families thrive, to answer the question: “What is the future of digital learning beyond this pandemic?”
I worked with the Oakland-based Spanish Speaking Citizens’ Foundation to launch a new games-based learning program to engage area youth who are home during the pandemic. “The results were fantastic,” Executive Director Alicia Contreras reported. “The kids were so engaged and participation raised 300%.”
